Notes for Joshua Waldron
In 1878 he was convicted of stabbing John Hopiss and James Morris during a fight at the Plough Inn, Whetty, Bromsgrove. The fight started after Joshua Waldron claimed that someone had stepped on his toes. He was sentenced to 5 years in jail and served 4 years4356,4367.
In 1892 he attacked his sister Jane Hill (nee Waldron) and his father George Davenport. His father had recently evicted Joshua and his family from a small cottage and nail shop for non-payment of rent. He concealed a bagging hook nearby then went to see his father to ask for the cottage back, or at least the nail shop so that he could have a living. His father refused so Joshua left and returned with the bagging hook. He attacked his sister Jane, cutting her face to the bone then severely injured his 73 year old father who tried to intervene. After breaking his father’s arm, inflicting several serious cuts and breaking a poker over his father’s head Joshua set fire to a hay rick and a clover rick before fleeing. He was caught by the police at the house of his friend William Tilt (probably the husband of his first cousin Catherine Waldron) in Astwood Hill, Chaddesley Corbett. He confessed to the police that his sister Jane had been his main target4368,4369,4370,4371,4372.
In 1905 he murdered his wife Martha Waldron (nee Wagstaff.) He beat her to death with his fists after an argument at their house then went to the Bell Inn in Bell End, Belbroughton. He drank 2 glasses of whiskey and took away another half a pint of whiskey to the New Pool, Madeley Heath. There he drank the whiskey and attempted to drown himself. He was rescued and arrested. The inquest found that he had wilfully murdered his wife. He was jailed and in 1911 he was an inmate of Dartmoor Prison4015,4360,4354.
