In 1862 he was convicted of stealing watercress from a field at the Pump House (property of Mrs. Partridge). He did not appear before the magistrates and was sentenced to a fine of 5s plus 10s 6d costs or 21 days hard labour. Since the fine was for immediate payment it seems likely that he was jailed3587.
